The class will be the first three Sundays in May from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This class covers all the basics of metalsmithing in depth from sawing (week 1), to cold connections, riveting, and tab setting (week 2), to soldering, finishing, and patination (week 3). Class times focus on demos with additional work time and we will have office hours (TBA) for anybody who's needing additional support outside of class time. Students also have full Studio access during open hours throughout the month of May with the option to extend into a paid membership at the end of the course ($40.00/month for students up to a year out of school and seniors 60 and over; $65.00 standard cost). Whether you are a total beginner or looking to solidify your technical foundation, this course offers a deep dive into the essential skills of the jeweler’s bench. Moving beyond the surface, we provide the space, tools, and expert guidance necessary to master the physics of metal. Weekly Curriculum Week 1: The Precision of the Saw Master the jeweler’s saw. We focus on ergonomics, blade selection, and intricate piercing techniques to create complex silhouettes in sheet metal. Week 2: Cold Connections & Mechanics Learn to join metal without heat. We will cover the structural art of riveting, tab setting for stones or found objects, and industrial cold joins. Week 3: Fire & Finish Enter the world of the torch. This week covers sweat soldering, butt joins, and pickling. We conclude with professional finishing techniques—from high-polish mirrors to chemical patination for aged, organic textures.
